Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) succeeded in organizing
presidential and legislative elections after numerous postponements.
The candidate of the political platform known as “<i><b>Lespwa</b></i>”
(“hope”), Rene Garcia Preval, was proclaimed the winner following
popular demonstrations that demanded immediate victory for the
candidate, who came out clearly ahead of the fifty-four (54) others on
the ballot. The new president was sworn in on 16 May 2006...<br>
